The Mayo-Choc cake as promised

Well here it is. for those of you who thought it sounded odd but were intrigued anyway the recipe follows.

Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake
1/4 cup cocoa
1 cup hot water
1 tblspn vanilla essence
2 cups flour (gluten free works also)
2 tspn baking soda
1 cup castor sugar
3/4 cup of Classic Mayonnaise (lite option works also)

Preheat oven to 180 degrees C

Mix cocoa, hot water and vanilla in jug. Combine mayonnaise.

Sift dry remaining dry ingredients. Make well in centre. Pour in wet mixture. Combine gently.

Pour into lined, greased round 20 cm cake tin. Bake for 35-40 minutes until cooked when tested with skewer. Cool in tin for 10mins before turning out.
If being very good eat as is........or ice with your fav chocolate icing!!!!

This recipe is an Allyson Gofton version from the Food in a Minute book that Mark bought me a few years back. So far the cake has never failed!!!!!! Even when I make a gluten free version. Yum!

Well I certainly won't be indulging in cake for the next two weeks as our 14 day detox begins today. Instead, Mark and I are indulging in Aloe vera juice, bowel biotic powder and Chlorella tablets which are a digestion and blood cleanser, detoxifier and internal deodoriser. The later always gives me the giggles.

I have spent the previous fortnight weaning myself off caffeine.....well almost. I still have one REAL coffee each morning. But the rest of day I now consume green teas and water.

The great thing about this detox plan is that you still remain on food..just remove junk eg fried foods and sugary treats. Avoiding too much processed stuff is a help also. Thinking about it, we rarely eat this stuff anyway. If it's not in the cupboard you wont eat it I guess!!!!

S0 we may experience some headaches, spots and tiredness as the toxins start coming out through our skin and you know where, but by continuing to eat a satisfying and healthy diet our blood sugars should remain balanced and we will feel ok. That's the plan anyway :-)

We have visitors coming in three weeks time so we should be full of energy with fragrant insides lol.

Why do this?
This little piece of statistical data should convince you:
By middle age people often have between 1 and 7 kgs of undigested faecal matter stuck in their colon and that is after a bowel motion....
Gentle detoxification removes waste material, heavy metals and environmental toxins that may be stored in fat deposits in the body.

So................I wonder what's swimming around in my digestive system, blood stream and fat stores?

Off for my yummy detox lunch. Mark has just whipped up fresh mussel fritters and salad. (and yes I know it's fathers day but he loves cooking :-)

I bet you wish you were detoxing at our house right now Yummm-o!

The unthinkable is happening.......

Well, a few of you will have heard our latest 'traveling' news. Our landlord as decided to sell the property we are currently living in. Bummer :-(
He rang last night so Mark and I haven't had a lot of time to digest the news and even decide what our action plan will be.
But, it looks like we may be moving in the near future, depending on how the market is progressing at the moment. I have noticed a few houses selling around our area so things must be looking up a little.
After the initial shock and sleeping on it, I am now gradually resigning myself to undoing all the 'homemaking' of the past couple of months and uplifting the family again.
I simply cannot believe this is happening!!!

It's already started around here with the real-estate agent coming this afternoon to take photos. This means the house will need to be 'market' tidy every day and open homes every Sunday. Good grief!!!

In reflection, if we move again....I will have lived in FIVE different houses in 2009.
How many sane people do this???????
Supposedly the Treacys do. I'm wondering if we have nomadic ancestry or even gypsy?? Maybe gypsy, with my music skills.

If the worst comes to a head, we do have a very large camping tent we can pitch. As long as it hasn't rotted in the humidity. (Note to self: set up tent and check for mould).

Our options at this point:
* Buy this house.....mmmmm need a mortgage broker and a really thorough building report to know about that one.
* Buy another place......on one income in this part of NZ we might be mortgaged to the eyeballs.
* Go back to work. Two incomes will allow for a second mortgage. I would miss Phoebe a lot with this option and very busy juggling job and three kids :-(
* Hope that the person who buys the place wants to be a landlord and we can stay here for a while longer.
* Look for another rental near the kid's school. A realistic option, but tricky when we are tied to this property until 19th December if it hasn't sold by then.
* Pitch that tent!! LOL
Well......I'm not sure which option will be 'the one' but whatever happens it looks like I will have some traveling to blog about after all. And I thought life at home would be predictable........oh how I was wrong.
For some reason the universe is sending us on a tikki tour this year. I wonder where our path will lead and where we will end up for our kids high school years??!!

I'll finish with a awwwww moment for you. Lucy our lovely fluffy moggy is very good friends with Molly and they often spend time together in bed each night.
This morning when I went in to help Molly choose clothes for kindy I found Lucy snuggly tucked up in bed. Molly had got up for breakfast and pulled the blankies up under pussy's chin. She stayed there for at least an hour or so!!
Nice for some huh? But gorgeous :-)

Moral dilemmas.....of a mother.

Supposedly writing can be therapeutic so maybe this will remind me of how very lucky I really am when I reread this post. So here goes.........

Recently I have been frustrated with the changes that have come with moving house, renting and staying at home with babies.
My social conscience and moral grounding is being put to the test for sure. I am finding myself making decisions that I am not entirely happy with and I'm wondering whether I can turn them into something positive.
A few things are particularly "bugging" me.

BUG #1. Cloth nappies verses disposable.
Oh, I love the convenience of the disposable. It's easy, reasonably comfortable for the child and fits into the bin nicely. But, this is where my inner turmoil begins. Recently we ran out of tank water. The rental property we live in does not have mains water, but a large rain water tank in the back garden. The "purchasing " of water led to discussions in our household, including the children, about how we can better conserve water in our daily operations.
Generally we all feel we can make a difference, while brushing teeth, rinsing dishes, washing cars, etc.
The "yellow let it mellow, brown flush it down" didn't sit so well with the girls....but they will adjust.
However .......it is the constant filling up and spinning of the washing machine full of lovely cloth napppies ...DAILY that is really sucking up the rain water. Oh and the shower, but I'm not willing to give those up.
I am now finding myself using the disposables to save water...but filling landfills at the same time. It is ......putting it mildly......pissing me off!!!!
I am extremely impressed with Karen Upsten, a Rangiora woman who has opened a composting plant with her husband in North Canterbury for an environmental method of the disposal of nappies. Fantastic idea and I applaud her for achieving this. I now need one in Whangaparaoa.

BUG #2. Food waste.............compost, landfill or burn.
When I was living in our Rangiora property I had a garden, one I was very proud of, (and have missed lately, but that is really another post altogether). We had three compost heaps on the go and created some lovely rich soil for the flower and shrub gardens.
At our current property we have no edible gardens, a few shrubs, couple of trees.
The positives are that we are not spending every weekend pruning and weeding. Oh, but I miss those compost heaps. Our food scraps....which if you have ever fed children will know can be in large quantities, have nowhere to go.
Mark started a worm farm..but we don't really have the balance of ingredients on our property. A healthy compost, as you know needs a balance of green, brown, wet and dry. If these elements are out of wack then you either end up with dust or a soggy mess. Neither is useful or healthy.
We have very few weeds, no spare soil or twigs, but plenty of food scraps.
So here is where I must make a decsion that does not make me happy.
Do I put these extras into landfill.......not happy!
Do I burn them thus not filling landfill but still creating some nasty emissions.....not happy!
Do I throw them over the fence?.................tempted.

I have learned over time that food or green waste of any sort actually rots and heats in landfill to the point where it creates some rather devastating gasses, including methane. Devastating because so many households dispose of them this way and the gasses are harmful to the environment.
I also love compost. Yeah, I might be a little odd, but there is something very satisfying about creating rich, nutritious soil to be put back into your garden......for FREE!!!!
I miss that.
Maybe the council here takes green waste?? That could be the answer to my problem.

So I need to focus on what I AM doing to support my environment:
Recycling bin, reusable supermarket bags, make own cleaners for house eg vinegar etc, try not to put too much gladwrap in the kids lunchboxes, recycling clothing at opportunity shops, recycling paper and cardboard, turning lights off.
There are probably other things I can't think of but at least we are making an effort and my kids will hopefully continue and do even more with there families in the future.

BUG #3 Stay at home mum.......in a new town!!!
How can I be BORED....there is SOOOOOOOOO much to do! I bet 'cha every stay at home mum has one of these moments. I have had few myself recently.
Not all aspects of staying at home with your children are negative. It can be extremely rewarding.
I think many mothers, myself included would agree that nowdays it is a privledge to be able to stay at home with your children. Not all mothers can financially, finding themselves putting young babies into childcare. I have had toddlers in daycare before and it didn't always feel like the right thing. On the other hand I love teaching and my two year olds benefitted from having a busy, challenged and happy mum.
Well, I am at home full time now and am very busy, occasionally challenged and mostly happy.
I consider myself to be a relatively motivated person in my work and love a little stress to keep me on my toes. The challenge in my current life is to somehow recreate this for myself, by myself. I think one of the greatest challenges of being at home 24/ 7 is to create variety, yet routine. Is this possible?
Being a teacher I am used to lessons changing at regular intervals thoughout the day and even then you never know if it is going to go as planned....I love that!
How am I going to get that into my day, at home? Everyday I get up to children that need the same things, go to the same places, make the same messes.......in the same places.
Housewives and mothers can rearrange the pantry or fridge shelves many times over and feel quite proud of their efforts. Every cupboard in the house could be folded and sorted, but it can't be done everyday and REALLY, do I want to look back on my life and remember that!!!!. I'm starting to wonder if there might be many very lost, crazy women out there, rearranging shelves of family bits and bobs. Maybe I'm heading there myself.

So what do I do about this dilemma......
* I walk outside and remind myself that I'm alive and only have babies for a short part of my life so remind myself to enjoy it.
* I visit the supermarket and talk like a crazy woman (it's so nice to talk to someone who talks back!!!!), to the checkout girl who looks frightened by the time she has finished packing my bags. ( At least it might put her off having babies too early).
* Somedays I don't tidy the house until AFTER lunch........naughty I know....... but it means I get to roll around on the floor with Phoebe. The stuff is always picked up before everyone else walks in the door later that afternoon.
* Skype coffee dates. My best friend and I have discovered if we make coffees and skype we can pretend we are sitting in the same room, baby in bed. It's almost civilised.
* Offering to help at school and kindy. Well I have tried, but with a baby in a pram I'm not the most attractive offer. This hasn't worked yet. But give it time.
* Drive to a new part of town and explore. If I can drag myself away from the clutter left around from three kids, close the door behind me and leave, then this is wonderful for a while. It makes the cleaning up later a little more bearable.
* Drag out all your old CDs. The most brilliant idea I've had in ages. Hilarious fun!
My girls don't mind seeing me dance too much so it's working ok for me. I'm ashamed of the albums I thought I had, but never bought and a little horrified to see what musical phases I have been through. Oh but I have missed playing and performing music. Phoebe and I sing together a lot, well I sing and she sways. Maybe I should hunt out a local choir??
* Get fit!!! Whangaparaoa is a challenging place for post pregnant gals like myself to get fit again. But endorphins are bloom'n fantastic things!!!!!!!
* Teach the kids to do more around the house. Yes it is my job to run the house, kids and food etc but it is important that the kids don't start treating their mum like the 'maid'.
* Jump in the car after tea and buy ice-creams. Spontaneity speaks for itself really.

Saturday morning television. A marvelous thing :-)

Saturday's notes...
I started writing this yesterday while the house was quiet and I was in a "mother at home" grump. Since then, after a lovely day out with my family I have cleared out some of my grumpy cobwebs and am now in a far more positive frame of mind.
I feel I now should really reflect on some positive aspects of moving up here:

* Today I remembered that we own a paper shredder. A brilliant resource for creating some compost material. I'll hunt that out this week.
* I am so very lucky to have an extremely healthy, energetic family. Yes, they keep me on my toes and my head spins sometimes. But you've gotta be grateful for health and energy.
* I may be finding it difficult to find some new contacts and friends..........but in the meantime I still have other wonderful people whom I love, and love me right back. Making regular contact with them is very good for the soul I'm finding!!
* Am I not the luckiest person alive to be able to sit around on the computer while my baby sleeps.......listening to native birds??????
* In the past few weeks I have got much better at cooking and am now dishing up a variety of delights for the troops!
* I have a choice. I can clean or leave a mess. I can cook or let them starve. I can dust or learn the guitar. I can vacuum or play with the baby. It is all about choice and deciding what is important for our family right now.
*Children are only children for their childhood. After that I'll have adults to worry about and wonder where the hell all the years went. I know this because I have very good friends with adult children and I hear them exclaim these feelings regularly.

So being happy...........and not wasting life while our lives go through a variety of changes. It is proving to be my greatest challenge at the moment.
I miss my job teaching in the classroom, but in reflection am doing an extremely important job. A frightening job! Good grief.......I'm responsible for the physical, intellectual and emotional health of three human beings. (not including that of my own and hubby's).

At this point I wish I had medals I could send to every mum I know. Mothers of animal, plant or children material, it really makes no difference.

I take my hat off to all of you. xx

What have we been up to lately??

It has been a while since I sat down to this blog. The fact is, when you get settled into your family routine again after shifting, life continues on in it's familiar way. I haven't felt the urge to write.......but the recent "ground hog" day nature of life has prompted me to get typing.

Firstly, the kids are all busy at their schools so there of course is not a lot of "traveling ' going on. We did visit the Auckland museum two weekends ago which we all enjoyed.

Caitlin seemed mostly interested in bones and structures.....interesting.
Molly enjoyed the wildlife displays, birds etc and the antique dresses. Mark got caught up in the war memorabilia which was displayed in fantastic fashion....very impressive. I was just so very happy to be out of the house away from the washing machine having time together.
No, Mark doesn't take the children to the local bar.......it was the Museum tavern in the street setting of Auckland, 1886

Molly's love for nature even stretches to the static displays. So much love for living things!!!

Phoebe got quite excited over the toy displays. Teddies and Dolls brought giggles and feet kicking!!!

Posing on a enormous fibreglass tree in the middle of the children's display area. It housed a brilliant tree hut!!!

We have kept away from the beaches lately due to the current 'toxin' scare. But I feel we will be back on them shortly. The days are getting longer, lighter and warmer. The trees around our house are now full of Tuis and Minors feeding off the new flowers. What an abosolutely gorgeous sound filtering through my window as I sit here writing. The baby is sleeping and all I can hear are several different varieties of birdcall. Including the cheeky Minor out the back that imitates a telephone ringing. The kids love him!

Our plans for the near future include heading up to Matakana for the weekend Farmers market. I remember seeing this market on Television one and it had a fantastic rep up here. It is set up in circular fashion with huge umbrellas covering every stall. Sounds to me as if Matakana has grown quite a bit since I lived up that way several years ago.
Can't wait for that trip. Maybe tomorrow if the weather continues to be so lovely.

The next three months are bringing visitors to our humble abode. Fabulous!
In fact, we have someone visiting us every month until we return to Canterbury for Christmas.
What an absolute treat.........

Jaz's brother came to stay!

A couple of weeks ago I got a text from my brother saying he had some leave from work and
was thinking about a long weekend up with us in Stanmore Bay.......was I up for it??

I very quickly jumped on skype and he booked flights on the spot!!!

Gee wizz I was excited.
Hey I love this place, but there is a limit to how many days a housewife and mum can spend talking to herself or the nine month old baby. I do occasionally talk to the fridge, but only when the neighbours are not watching.

So my bro gave me about three days notice.......which made it even more exciting, but then I realised that the poor guy was going to have to sleep on boxes. The spare bedroom being the last room to organise. In fact I hadn't even unwrapped the plastic off the new guest-bed ( buying of this outlined in earlier post).
Well,, there is nothing like having a guest arrive to get me motivated. I had the boxes sorted and new bed unwrapped in a day, clean sheets and room smelling fresh the next. Very pleased with my efforts I stood back and realised that now I was ready for any visitors.

Fantastic.........get booking flights friends!!!

I picked my brother up on Friday..my first trip to airport on my own, easy! I have sussed this traffic thing!!! I even negotiated the harbour bridge lanes despite a nasty accident throwing the lanes into havoc earlier.
Unfortunately I managed to very nearly getting him, Molly, Phoebe and myself lost on the way home. We did a nice tikki tour past one-tree hill instead LOL
But we found the motorway eventually and got home safe and sound.

Saturday we explored the beaches of Whangaparaoa. It was sunny but quite fresh. Very much like a Canterbury day, just a few degrees milder.
My brother and Caitlin combing the rocks at Shakepear Bay, Whangaparaoa

Our tribute to Michelangelo....lol

Lots to be found on the rocks for the Treacy family

Sunday we all ventured into Auckland to visit MOTAT, Museum of Transport and Technology. Fantastic fun awesome examples of engineering and New Zealand history. The kids thought it was great.

Mark and Molly using whisper dishes...Caitlin was listening at other dish a few metres away.

Luke and Molly on very cool old train.

Girls and I on tram.

Monday, the kids went off the school and kindy so Luke, Phoebe and I visited Devonport.
Northland really turned the weather on for us and the view from North head was incredible, looking out over Auckland city. We visited Devonport chocolates and wandered through shops and cafes. It was a gorgeous, relaxing day. A nice way to finish a great long weekend with my bro!

One last note:
This sign, spotted by my brother on a little side street in Devonport totally bewildered me..............the most hilarious thing I have seen in ages.
Doing what?????

I want to work there..............I can do stuff.

Gymnastic Fantastic!

One of our aims at the moment is to become more involved in the community. Our bay has an amazing leisure centre which hosts a range of gym classes and facilities for all ages, a heated pool and creche.
Molly and I discovered a class on Tuesdays called "Gymanies"; a gymnastics class for under fives!!!
Molly, Phoebe and myself toddled along to check it out!

The instructors were warm and welcoming. even Phoebe was invited to play with some of the smaller pieces of equipment.

Molly took to the equipment and activities quickly, her prior gym experience from Rangiora coming back to her quick smart!

Phoebe was intrigued by her older sister's antics and really wanted to participate in so much more.

I have a feeling my third daughter is going to grow
up VERY quickly!!!

Anyway, it was a really fun session and I think we will return each Tuesday. Molly has been told she could get a certificate or badge if she keeps working at the activities.

This was enough to get her very excited indeed!

Molly starts kindy!!!

Molly started kindy Monday morning extremely excited. She is doing two full days, Monday and Wednesday with a morning on Friday as well.
She was up early and into her clothes faster than I had seen her in weeks.
We walked to kindy...two minutes down the road. It is on the same site as Caitlin' school so Molly is feeling very "big", as she says!!

The above photos show her happy, enthusiastic and full of energy about her day to come.

I had to take a photo at the end of the day when all she could manage was a drink and about an hour on the couch. Kindy really takes it out of you!!!
